Lawyer Referrals - Personal Injury Law Firms, Fees, Percentages
Most lawyers today choose to specialize in niche areas of the law, out of necessity, because of the
complexity and sheer volume of new cases which apply to each area of specialization. As a result, lawyers
frequently refer clients to other specialists for cases outside of their area of expertise. A trusted lawyer
referral is one of the best means of finding legal representation, so long as the referral is based on the
client's best interest.
Be aware, many personal injury lawyers pay referral fees. The fee paid to the referring attorney may be
nominal, or up to 50% or more of the fee collected. Each client should verify independently that a referral
is to a qualified personal injury lawyer rather than based on the referral fee alone. Verification can be
rather simple when asking the proper questions at the proper time.
Inquire about lawyer referral fees
Client inquires regarding referral fees are appropriate in all circumstances. Many referral fees are
based on work previously performed, or conversely, could be based only on the referral of a new client.
Either way, lawyer referral agreements may benefit or detract from results.
